Winning citations inside Google AI Overviews
An early change in writing style put the site inside AI-generated answers for 30+ targeted queries — including searches where it does not rank in the organic top ten at all.
Google started answering questions with AI Overviews built from a handful of cited sources — ranking well stopped being enough.
Studied what cited pages have in common, tested a new writing standard on live content, then trained the SEO and content teams on it.
Cited in AI Overviews for 30+ targeted queries — including six searches where the site doesn’t rank in the top ten at all.
Ranking well stopped being enough
Google began answering many informational queries with an AI Overview at the top of the page, built from a small set of cited sources. For those queries the searcher often has what they need before reaching the first organic result.
For a content-led business that shifted the goal. The content also had to be the kind that AI answers quote and link, and the existing writing style had not been built with that in mind.
Learn, test, then train the team
Studied how generative AI was changing search behaviour, drawing on multiple industry sources rather than waiting for a playbook.
Applied the new approach to live content first and watched how search responded, so the change was backed by results.
Ran sessions with the SEO and content teams so every new page followed the standard — one person’s learning turned into the whole team’s default.
What the cited pages have in common
A direct, one-sentence definition near the top of the page.
Step-by-step sequences for how-to queries, in order, with no padding.
Headings written as the question the searcher typed.
Year-stamped figures an AI answer can quote and date.
Feature-by-feature detail that can be lifted as a self-contained answer.

Cited beside the vendor’s own documentation
After the change the site ranked for 20+ queries and was cited in AI Overviews for around 30+ targeted queries. For "marketing cloud features", the AI Overview lists it among its main sources next to Salesforce’s own page and Salesforce Ben, and cites it inline for the Advertising Studio point.
A live check of around 60 Salesforce-related queries in September 2026 found 15 AI Overview citations and 22 page-one rankings. Six of those citations come from queries where the site does not rank in the organic top ten: for those searches, the AI Overview is the only place on page one where the brand appears.
AI Overviews are generated fresh and can cite different sources from one load to the next, so that check is a snapshot rather than a fixed count.
Why it worked
Early
The shift was spotted and acted on before traffic moved to AI answers.
Tested first
Live content proved the style before anyone was trained on it.
Taught, not filed
Training made the change stick across every new page, not a handful.
Quotable
Clear definitions, numbered steps and current data gave AI answers something to lift.
Second route
Citations opened a path to page one on queries the site did not rank for.
Durable
The standard keeps applying as new pages ship.
